Menopause & Perimenopause

The menopause transition can feel like your body rewrote its own rules without telling you: hot flashes that hijack a meeting, night sweats that soak the sheets, sleep that fragments, moods that swing, and a general sense of not feeling like yourself. These symptoms are real and common — and you don't have to simply endure them. Acupuncture is one of the better-established complementary options for menopause symptoms, and a welcome one for the many women who can't take, or would rather not take, hormone therapy.

What Acupuncture Can Help With

Hot flashes and night sweats. These vasomotor symptoms are the signature of menopause, and they're among the better-supported uses of acupuncture. Many patients experience a reduction in how often and how intensely they hit — and research on acupuncture for hot flashes is one of the more encouraging areas in this field, though results vary from person to person.

Sleep disruption. Menopausal sleep problems — trouble falling asleep, 3am waking, night sweats breaking your rest — respond to acupuncture's well-known benefit for sleep. For many women this is the single most life-changing improvement.

Mood, irritability, and anxiety. The hormonal shifts of this transition ripple into mood. Because nervous-system regulation is the center of my practice, treatment often eases the emotional turbulence alongside the physical symptoms.

Other symptoms. Fatigue, brain fog, joint aches, and cycle irregularity in perimenopause are all part of the picture treatment can address as a whole.

A Grounded, Collaborative Approach

Acupuncture is a complement to your medical care, not a replacement for it. Menopause is also a time when certain symptoms need a physician's attention — new or abnormal bleeding (especially any bleeding after menopause), and decisions about hormone therapy or bone and heart health all belong with your doctor or gynecologist. I'll always tell you when something needs medical evaluation, and any herbal medicine is reviewed against your medications and health history. For women navigating whether to use hormone therapy, acupuncture can be a useful option to try alongside or instead — a decision to make with your physician.

What Treatment Looks Like

Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes). A detailed history of your symptoms, cycle status, sleep, mood, health history, and any treatments you're using or considering — followed by your first treatment.

A typical course. Menopause symptoms usually respond gradually and cumulatively. A common approach is weekly sessions for several weeks (often 6–10), tracking the symptoms you care most about — hot flash frequency, sleep quality, mood — then spacing sessions out as you improve. Symptoms can ebb and flow with this transition, so some women return for tune-ups during tougher stretches.

What Patients Say

"After just 8 sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement in my neuropathy symptoms. The care and expertise provided made a significant difference in my daily life. I couldn't believe how better I felt, and I'm truly grateful for the support and guidance throughout the process." — Watsonville patient

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture really help hot flashes? Hot flashes and night sweats are among the better-supported uses of acupuncture, and many patients experience meaningful reduction in frequency and intensity — though, honestly, results vary from woman to woman. It's a low-risk option that's especially valuable if you can't or prefer not to use hormone therapy.

Can it help me sleep through the night again? Yes — menopausal sleep disruption is one of the most responsive symptoms, both because acupuncture supports sleep directly and because easing night sweats removes a major cause of waking. Many women say restored sleep is the biggest change.

Is this an alternative to hormone therapy (HRT)? Acupuncture is a drug-free option many women use alongside or instead of hormone therapy, particularly when HRT isn't suitable for them. Whether to use HRT is a decision for you and your physician; acupuncture can be part of the picture either way.

How many sessions will I need? Symptoms typically improve over a course of treatment — often weekly for 6–10 weeks — rather than in a single visit. You should see a trend within the first several sessions, and we track your specific symptoms.

When should I see my doctor? Any bleeding after menopause, or new or abnormal bleeding during perimenopause, needs prompt medical evaluation. Decisions about hormone therapy, bone density, and heart health also belong with your physician. Acupuncture complements that care.
