Acupuncture for Hormonal Balance — Santa Cruz
Medically reviewed by Dr. Ava Zack, DAcHM, LAc - Doctor of Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

Hormonal Balance
Hormonal symptoms have a way of touching everything — your mood, your sleep, your energy, your cycle, your sense of feeling like yourself. Whether it's the monthly disruption of PMS or painful periods, the unpredictability of perimenopause, the hot flashes and sleep loss of menopause, or the complex picture of PCOS, these symptoms are real, common, and too often dismissed. Supporting hormonal health is one of the oldest and most established areas of acupuncture and herbal medicine, and one where patients frequently feel meaningful relief.
What Acupuncture Can Support
Menstrual cycle issues. PMS, irregular or painful periods, and cycle-related mood and energy shifts are among the most common reasons patients seek hormonal support. Treatment aims to smooth the cycle and ease the symptoms around it.

Perimenopause and menopause. Hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, and irregular cycles during the menopause transition respond well for many patients — and acupuncture offers a welcome option for those who can't or prefer not to use hormone therapy. The benefit for sleep and hot flashes is among the better-supported uses.

PCOS and cycle regulation. Polycystic ovary syndrome involves hormonal and metabolic factors, and acupuncture with herbal medicine can offer supportive care for cycle regularity and associated symptoms — alongside, never replacing, your physician's management.

The whole picture. Hormonal symptoms are entangled with stress, sleep, and nervous-system regulation — the center of how I practice. Often the most effective approach treats the whole system rather than chasing one symptom.

A Grounded, Collaborative Approach

Hormonal health is an area where acupuncture has genuine value and where some symptoms signal something that needs medical evaluation. New or abnormal bleeding, severe symptoms, suspected thyroid issues, or anything concerning belongs with your physician or gynecologist first — I'll always tell you when that's the case, and I work alongside your medical providers rather than around them. Any herbal medicine is reviewed against your medications and conditions.
What Treatment Looks Like
Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes).
A detailed history of your cycle, symptoms, sleep, mood, stress, medications, and any diagnoses or testing, followed by your first treatment. Hormonal patterns often reveal themselves in the details, so this conversation matters.

A typical course. Hormonal work runs on cycles. A common approach is weekly sessions over 2–3 menstrual cycles (or several weeks for menopause symptoms), tracking the specific symptoms you care most about — cycle regularity, hot flash frequency, sleep, mood — and adjusting from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can acupuncture help hot flashes and night sweats? Hot flashes and night sweats are among the better-supported uses of acupuncture for menopause, and a frequent reason patients come in — especially those who prefer not to use, or can't use, hormone therapy.

Can it regulate my menstrual cycle? Cycle regularity, PMS, and painful periods are classic areas for acupuncture and herbal medicine. Treatment is timed to your cycle and aims to ease symptoms and smooth the pattern, alongside medical care for any underlying condition.

Does acupuncture help PCOS? Acupuncture and herbal medicine can offer supportive care for the cycle and symptom picture in PCOS, but they support — never replace — your physician's management of the condition.

Can it help PMS mood symptoms and irritability? Yes — because hormonal symptoms are so intertwined with stress, sleep, and nervous-system regulation, treatment often eases the mood, irritability, and sleep disruption that come with PMS and the menopause transition.

When should I see a doctor instead? New, heavy, or abnormal bleeding, severe symptoms, or anything concerning needs medical evaluation first. Acupuncture is a complement to that care, and I'll always tell you when something belongs with your physician.
