Fertility Support

Trying to conceive — whether you're just starting, months in, or deep into IVF cycles — can take over everything: your calendar, your relationship, your sense of control. If you're researching fertility acupuncture, you've probably already noticed it's one of the most common reasons people seek acupuncture, and that many fertility clinics now work alongside acupuncturists.

My approach to fertility support is the same as the rest of my practice: evidence-informed, honest about what's known and not known, and designed to work with your medical care, not around it.

How Acupuncture Fits Into Fertility Care

Cycle regulation and whole-system health. For patients conceiving naturally, treatment focuses on menstrual cycle regularity, hormonal balance, circulation to the reproductive organs, sleep, and stress physiology — the foundations that fertility is built on. Classical acupuncture and, where appropriate, herbal medicine have the most to offer here.

Adjunct support during IUI and IVF. Acupuncture is widely used alongside assisted reproduction — commonly in the weeks leading up to a cycle and around embryo transfer. Research on whether it improves IVF success rates is genuinely mixed, and I'll tell you that plainly rather than overselling. What's better established: it reduces stress and anxiety during one of the most stressful medical processes there is, and many patients find that alone worth the chair time.

The stress-fertility loop. Months or years of trying to conceive create chronic stress, and treatment cycles add more. Nervous system regulation is the center of my practice, and fertility patients often say their sessions are the only time in the month they're not bracing for the next test result.

Male factor matters too. Fertility is a two-person equation, and supportive care for sperm health — addressing sleep, stress, and lifestyle factors — is part of a complete picture.

Honesty above all. Acupuncture cannot fix every cause of infertility, and some situations need medical intervention first or only. If your history suggests testing or treatment you haven't had, I'll say so and point you to the right provider. Patients trust me because I don't sell false hope.

What Treatment Looks Like

Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes). A detailed history: your cycles, how long you've been trying, any testing or diagnoses, prior treatments, and your plans (natural conception, IUI, IVF). From there, a realistic plan and your first treatment.

A typical course. Fertility work runs on cycles, not sessions — a common rhythm is weekly treatments across 2–3 menstrual cycles for foundational work, or treatments timed to your IVF calendar if you're in assisted reproduction. We'll align the plan to your timeline.

With your fertility clinic. If you're working with an REI (reproductive endocrinologist) or OB/GYN, I coordinate timing — and any herbal medicine is reviewed against your protocol, since some herbs shouldn't be combined with stimulation medications. Your fertility doctor always has the final word.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture increase IVF success rates? The honest answer: research is mixed — some studies show benefit, others don't. What's more consistently supported is reduced stress and anxiety during treatment cycles. I'd rather you start with accurate expectations than inflated ones.

When should I start acupuncture before IVF? A common approach is beginning 4–12 weeks before a cycle, with sessions timed around key points in your protocol. If your transfer is next week, starting now is still reasonable — we'll work with the time available.

Can acupuncture help with irregular cycles or PCOS? Cycle irregularity is one of the areas classical acupuncture and herbal medicine are most often used for, alongside lifestyle and medical care. For PCOS specifically, treatment supports — never replaces — medical management.

Is it safe to continue acupuncture if I get pregnant? Yes, with appropriate point selection — certain points are avoided in pregnancy, which is standard training for licensed acupuncturists. Many patients continue care into early pregnancy for nausea and anxiety support.

My partner should probably come too, shouldn't he? Ideally, yes. Male factor contributes in roughly half of cases, and supportive care for sperm health takes about three months to matter (one sperm production cycle) — so the earlier, the better.
