Acupuncture for Fatigue, Burnout & Stress Exhaustion in Santa Cruz
Medically reviewed by Dr. Ava Zack, DAcHM, LAc - Doctor of Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

Burnout & Exhaustion
There's a specific kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix: waking up already depleted, pushing through the day on fumes, wired but exhausted at night, foggy, flat, and running on a reserve tank that never quite refills. Whether you call it burnout, chronic stress, or being completely run down, it's one of the most common reasons people come to see me — and one where a nervous-system-focused approach has a lot to offer.
A Note on "Adrenal Fatigue"
Many people searching for help use the term "adrenal fatigue." It's worth being straight with you: "adrenal fatigue" is not a recognized medical diagnosis, and major endocrine organizations don't accept it as a condition. But the experience it describes — persistent exhaustion, poor stress tolerance, feeling depleted — is absolutely real, and often reflects a nervous system and body worn down by chronic stress. So while I won't diagnose or treat a condition that medicine doesn't recognize, the fatigue and burnout you're feeling are real, common, and very much something acupuncture can support. Genuine, persistent fatigue should also be evaluated by a physician, because it can have real medical causes — thyroid issues, anemia, sleep disorders, and others — that deserve proper testing.
How Acupuncture Supports Recovery from Burnout
Regulating the stress response. Chronic stress keeps the nervous system stuck in "fight or flight," which is exhausting to sustain and disrupts the recovery your body needs. Acupuncture promotes the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state — the mode in which your body actually restores itself. This nervous-system regulation is the center of my practice.
Restoring sleep quality. Burnout and poor sleep are locked together. Acupuncture's well-supported benefit for sleep helps break that cycle, and better sleep is often where the climb back to energy begins.
Steadying mood and resilience. Exhaustion, low mood, and irritability travel together. Treatment supports a calmer, more resilient baseline — complementing, never replacing, mental health care when that's needed.
Supporting the whole system. Digestion, tension, and energy all suffer under chronic stress. Treatment addresses the whole picture rather than chasing one symptom, sometimes with herbal support reviewed against your medications.
What Treatment Looks Like
Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes).
A wide-angle conversation about your energy, sleep, stress, mood, workload, and health history — plus encouragement to have persistent fatigue medically evaluated if you haven't. Then your first treatment, focused on calming and restoring.
A typical course. Recovery from burnout is gradual. A common rhythm is weekly sessions for 6–8 weeks, tracking sleep, energy, and how quickly you bounce back from stress, then spacing out as your baseline rebuilds.
What Patients Say
"After just 8 sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement in my neuropathy symptoms. The care and expertise provided made a significant difference in my daily life. I couldn't believe how better I felt, and I'm truly grateful for the support and guidance throughout the process." — Watsonville patient
Frequently Asked Questions
Can acupuncture help "adrenal fatigue"? The symptoms people mean by "adrenal fatigue" — chronic exhaustion, poor stress tolerance, feeling depleted — are real and are something acupuncture can support by regulating the stress response and improving sleep. That said, "adrenal fatigue" isn't a recognized medical diagnosis, and persistent fatigue should be evaluated by a physician to rule out real medical causes.
I sleep but I'm still exhausted. Can this help? Yes — unrefreshing sleep is a hallmark of burnout and chronic stress. Acupuncture works on both the sleep quality itself and the nervous-system overdrive that keeps you from truly recovering.
How long until I feel more energy? Many people notice better sleep and a calmer baseline within the first few weeks of weekly sessions, with energy rebuilding over a course of treatment. Recovery from deep burnout takes patience, and we track progress along the way.
Should I see a doctor too? Yes, for persistent fatigue. Real medical causes — thyroid problems, anemia, sleep disorders, and others — need testing. Acupuncture complements that workup and supports the stress and sleep side of the picture.
