Vagus Nerve Support
If you feel permanently switched "on" — wired but tired, anxious for no clear reason, unable to fully relax even when nothing is wrong, with a body that seems stuck in a stress response it won't release — you're describing a dysregulated nervous system. It's the thread running underneath so much of what I treat: anxiety, insomnia, digestive trouble, chronic pain, burnout. This page is about that thread itself, because nervous-system regulation isn't just one service I offer — it's the lens I bring to nearly everything.
The Autonomic Nervous System, and Why the Vagus Nerve Matters
Your autonomic nervous system runs on two branches: the sympathetic ("fight or flight") and the parasympathetic ("rest and digest"). In a healthy, resilient system, these shift fluidly — you ramp up to meet a challenge, then settle back down to recover. Chronic stress, trauma, illness, and modern life can leave the system stuck in sympathetic overdrive, unable to downshift.
The vagus nerve is the centerpiece of the parasympathetic side — the longest cranial nerve, connecting brain to heart, lungs, and gut, and the main driver of the body's "rest and digest" and recovery state. Higher vagal tone is associated with better stress resilience, calmer mood, steadier digestion, and more restful sleep. Supporting the body's ability to access that parasympathetic, vagus-mediated state is the heart of how I practice.
How Acupuncture Supports Regulation
Shifting the balance toward "rest and digest." Acupuncture is well known for promoting parasympathetic activity — most patients feel it directly on the table, a distinct settling, slower breath, released tension. The aim of a course of treatment is to make that calmer state more accessible in daily life, not just during the session.
Electroacupuncture and vagal stimulation. This is an area I often use electroacupuncture — gentle electrical stimulation delivered through the needles, including at points (such as on the ear and around the body) used to engage the vagus-mediated parasympathetic response. Electroacupuncture allows precise, consistent, measurable input to the nervous system, which is why it's a focus of much of the modern research into acupuncture's effects on autonomic function. For patients working on deep nervous-system regulation, it can be a powerful tool.
Building a more resilient baseline. A single session calms; the goal of treatment over time is a nervous system that recovers from stress faster and spends more of its time at rest — better stress resilience, not just momentary relief.
Treating the downstream symptoms too. Because so many conditions flow from dysregulation, regulating the system often eases the symptoms it's been driving — sleep, anxiety, digestion, tension, and pain frequently improve together.
Who This Is For
Patients drawn to this work often describe chronic stress or burnout, anxiety that lives in the body, trouble "switching off," sleep that won't come, stress-driven digestive issues, or the long tail of a nervous system that's been under sustained load. It's also foundational support that complements work you may be doing elsewhere — with a therapist, physician, or other provider. Acupuncture for nervous-system regulation is a complement to mental health and medical care, not a replacement for either.
What Treatment Looks Like
Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes).
We talk through how dysregulation shows up for you — physically, mentally, in sleep and digestion — your history, stress load, and any care you're receiving. Then a first treatment, often incorporating electroacupuncture where appropriate, focused on activating the parasympathetic response.
A typical course. Regulation builds with consistency. A common approach is weekly sessions for 6–8 weeks, then spacing out as your baseline shifts. We track the markers that matter to you — sleep, calm, digestion, how quickly you recover from stress.
What Patients Say
"After just 8 sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement in my neuropathy symptoms. The care and expertise provided made a significant difference in my daily life. I couldn't believe how better I felt, and I'm truly grateful for the support and guidance throughout the process." — Watsonville patient
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "nervous system dysregulation" actually mean? It describes an autonomic nervous system stuck in stress mode ("fight or flight") and unable to fully downshift into "rest and digest." It often shows up as feeling wired but exhausted, anxious without clear cause, unable to relax, with disrupted sleep and digestion.
How does acupuncture affect the vagus nerve? Acupuncture, particularly with electroacupuncture at certain points, is used to engage the parasympathetic, vagus-mediated "rest and digest" response. The aim is to help your body access that calmer, recovery-oriented state more readily. It's an active area of modern research into acupuncture and autonomic function.
Why do you use electroacupuncture for this? Electroacupuncture delivers gentle, precise, consistent electrical stimulation through the needles, allowing measurable input to the nervous system. For deeper nervous-system regulation work, it can be more powerful than needles alone — which is why it features in much of the research on acupuncture's autonomic effects.
Will I feel something during the session? Most patients feel a distinct settling — slower breathing, released tension, sometimes drifting toward sleep. Many describe it as the calmest hour of their week.
Is this a replacement for therapy or medication? No. Nervous-system regulation through acupuncture is a complement to mental health and medical care, not a substitute. It works well alongside therapy and treatment from your other providers.
