Gua Sha
in Santa Cruz
Gua sha is a traditional East Asian technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently stroke the skin, releasing tension, improving circulation, and moving stagnation through the tissue. At Ava Zack Acupuncture in downtown Santa Cruz, gua sha is offered both as a therapeutic body treatment for muscular pain and as a gentle facial treatment for sculpting and skin vitality. It pairs naturally with acupuncture and cupping.
How Gua Sha Works
Using a rounded tool and a little oil, the practitioner applies repeated, directional strokes across the skin and underlying tissue. This stimulates blood flow, breaks up areas of restriction in the fascia, and encourages the body's natural healing response. On the body the strokes are firmer and therapeutic; on the face they're light and lifting.
Body Gua Sha vs. Facial Gua Sha — What's the Difference?
These share a name and a tool shape but are genuinely different treatments:
Body gua sha uses firm, deliberate pressure over muscles and fascia — typically the neck, shoulders, back, and limbs — to release deep tension, ease pain, and restore mobility. Firmer strokes can raise temporary small red or purple spots on the skin called "sha." This is an expected, therapeutic part of body gua sha, isn't painful, and fades over a few days as the released stagnation clears.
Facial gua sha uses a smooth stone (such as jade or rose quartz) with light, gliding pressure along the contours of the face and neck. The goal is lymphatic drainage, reduced puffiness, improved circulation, relaxation of facial muscle tension, and a sculpted, brightened look. Because the pressure is light, facial gua sha does not produce sha or marks and has no downtime. It's often woven into cosmetic and facial acupuncture.
In short: body gua sha is firm therapeutic work for pain and tension and may briefly raise "sha"; facial gua sha is a gentle aesthetic treatment with no marks and no downtime.
What Gua Sha Can Help With
-
Muscle tightness and limited range of motion
-
Stress-related holding patterns
-
(Facial) puffiness, fluid retention, dull tone, and facial tension
What to Expect
Like cupping, gua sha is usually one component of a treatment and is included in your session when appropriate. Body gua sha feels like firm, satisfying scraping pressure; facial gua sha feels light and calming. You'll receive simple aftercare guidance, especially keeping the area warm and hydrated after body gua sha.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does gua sha hurt? No. Body gua sha is firm but shouldn't be painful, and facial gua sha is very gentle. Tell your practitioner your pressure preference at any time.
What are the red marks from body gua sha? Those are called "sha" — temporary small reddish spots that reflect released stagnation and circulation to the area. They aren't bruises in the injury sense and fade within a few days. Facial gua sha does not produce them.
Is facial gua sha just a beauty trend? The at-home version is popular, but professional facial gua sha is performed with clinical technique and is most effective combined with facial acupuncture for circulation, lymphatic drainage, and muscle relaxation.
