Cupping Therapy in Santa Cruz
Cupping is one of the oldest and most satisfying therapies in East Asian medicine. By creating gentle suction on the skin, cupping lifts and decompresses tissue — the opposite of the downward pressure of massage — to increase circulation, release tight fascia, and move stagnation. At Ava Zack Acupuncture in downtown Santa Cruz, cupping is offered both as a body treatment for pain and tension and as a refined facial treatment for skin health, and it's frequently combined with acupuncture in a single visit.
How Cupping Works
Cups are applied to the skin and a vacuum is created — traditionally with heat, today most often with a hand pump. The suction draws blood flow into the area, loosens connective tissue, and stimulates the nervous and lymphatic systems. Cups may be left stationary for a few minutes or glided across oiled skin (sliding cupping) to cover larger muscle groups. The result is reduced tension, improved mobility, and a feeling of release.
Body Cupping vs. Facial Cupping — What's the Difference?
This is the most important thing to understand before booking, because the two are quite different experiences:
Body cupping uses larger, firmer cups with stronger suction on areas like the back, shoulders, neck, hips, and legs. It targets muscle tension, myofascial restriction, and pain, and it goes deep. Body cupping can leave temporary circular discoloration — often called "cup kisses" — where stagnation was released. These marks are not bruises in the injury sense, aren't painful, and typically fade within 3–7 days. If you have an event with bare shoulders coming up, mention it and we'll plan placement accordingly.
Facial cupping uses small, soft silicone cups with very light, continually moving suction. It's gentle, relaxing, and designed to boost micro-circulation, encourage lymphatic drainage, reduce puffiness, and support a brighter, more lifted appearance. Because the cups are kept moving and the suction is light, facial cupping does not leave marks and has no downtime. It's often included as part of cosmetic and facial acupuncture.
In short: body cupping is therapeutic bodywork for pain and tension and may leave temporary marks; facial cupping is a delicate aesthetic treatment with no marks and no downtime.
What Cupping Can Help With
-
Muscle recovery after exercise or injury
-
Restricted range of motion and myofascial adhesions
-
Stress and the physical holding patterns that come with it
-
(Facial) puffiness, dull tone, and signs of stress in the skin
What to Expect
Cupping is usually one part of a treatment rather than a standalone visit, and is included in your acupuncture session when clinically appropriate. Body cupping feels like a firm, pulling pressure that most people find deeply relieving; facial cupping feels light and soothing. You'll get aftercare guidance — for body cupping, that includes staying hydrated and keeping the area warm and covered for a day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cupping hurt? No. Body cupping feels like a strong but comfortable pull; facial cupping is very gentle. Most people find both relaxing.
Will cupping leave marks? Body cupping can leave temporary circular discoloration that fades within a few days — it reflects the release of stagnation, not injury. Facial cupping does not leave marks.
Is facial cupping safe for my skin? Yes. It uses light, moving suction with soft cups and is suitable for most skin types. Let us know about any active skin conditions so we can tailor the treatment.
