Stroke Recovery
Recovering from a stroke is one of the hardest kinds of work there is — relearning movement, rebuilding strength and coordination, and pushing back against weakness, spasticity, and the frustration of a body that no longer responds the way it did. If you or someone you love is in stroke recovery and looking for a research-supported way to strengthen that rehabilitation, electroacupuncture is one of the most-studied and most promising complementary therapies for exactly this. Here's an honest picture of what it can offer.
Stroke is a medical emergency. Fast treatment saves brain tissue and lives. This page is about recovery and rehabilitation after a stroke has been medically treated — electroacupuncture is a complement to your medical and rehabilitation care, not a replacement for it, and never a substitute for emergency treatment.
What the Research Shows
Stroke rehabilitation is one of the areas where acupuncture has its largest and most consistent body of research:
Improved motor function and recovery. Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials show that acupuncture and electroacupuncture, added to standard rehabilitation, significantly improve motor function, neurological recovery, and activities of daily living after stroke. It's studied for both upper-limb and lower-limb recovery, for spasticity, and for overall functional outcomes — often measured with standard tools like the Fugl-Meyer Assessment and the Barthel Index.
A real mechanism — supporting the brain's own repair. This is where it connects to how I practice. Laboratory research shows electroacupuncture — including at the scalp points GV20 (Baihui) and GV14 (Dazhui) — promotes the brain's endogenous repair processes: enhancing neurogenesis (the birth of new neurons) in regions like the subventricular zone, supporting neuroplasticity and the rewiring the brain does during recovery, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and protecting neurons from further injury. In other words, electroacupuncture appears to help create conditions in which the recovering brain can better repair and reorganize itself.
Best as a partner to rehabilitation. The strongest evidence is for acupuncture combined with conventional rehabilitation (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy) — the two work together. That's exactly how I use it: to strengthen and support the rehabilitation you're already doing, not to replace it.
My Approach to Stroke Recovery
My approach is built around supporting neuroplasticity and neurological rehabilitation:
Targeting recovery and neuroprotection. Treatment uses electroacupuncture with points and an approach aimed at supporting the brain's repair and reorganization — including scalp and body points studied in the stroke-recovery research — with the goal of promoting neuroplasticity, supporting the neurons and pathways involved in recovery, and encouraging functional gains.
Addressing the specific deficits. Stroke recovery is individual — weakness, spasticity, coordination, sensation, and mobility all differ from person to person. Treatment is tailored to your specific deficits and recovery goals, in coordination with your rehabilitation team.
Timing and consistency. Recovery is most active in the months after a stroke, but meaningful gains are possible later too. Electroacupuncture is used as a consistent course alongside your rehab, and it can be valuable both in earlier recovery and for longer-standing deficits.
The whole person. Stroke recovery affects mood, sleep, energy, and motivation. Nervous-system regulation — the center of my practice — supports the emotional and physical toll of recovery, which matters for the work rehabilitation asks of you.
What Treatment Looks Like
Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes). A thorough review of your stroke history, current deficits, medications, rehabilitation plan, and recovery goals — with coordination with your medical and rehab team — followed by a carefully adapted first treatment.
A typical course. Stroke recovery responds to consistent, frequent treatment — often two to three sessions per week over a course of weeks, alongside your rehabilitation. We track your functional progress — movement, strength, mobility, daily function — and coordinate with your providers.
Safety and adaptation. Treatment is adapted to your mobility and needs, with attention to fall risk, sensation changes, and any blood-thinning medications. Care is always coordinated with your medical team.

Does it replace my physical therapy or rehab? No — and the research is clear that it works best combined with rehabilitation. Keep doing your PT, OT, and speech therapy; electroacupuncture is designed to strengthen and support that work, and I coordinate with your rehab team.
Is it safe if I'm on blood thinners? Acupuncture is generally low-risk, but it's important I know your full history and medications, including blood thinners, so care is adapted appropriately. Coordination with your medical team is part of that.
