Acupuncture for Metabolic & Weight Support — Santa Cruz
Medically reviewed by Dr. Ava Zack, DAcHM, LAc - Doctor of Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

Metabolic & Weight Balance
Let's start with honesty, because this is a field full of overblown promises: acupuncture is not a weight-loss treatment, and anyone selling it as one — "lose X pounds with ear seeds!" — is overselling. What acupuncture can do is support the systems that quietly drive weight struggles for many people: stress physiology, poor sleep, blood-sugar swings, hormonal imbalance, and the cravings and emotional eating that grow out of all of them. If you've found that willpower alone never seems to be the whole answer, those underlying systems are usually why.
This is whole-body support work, designed to help your body function in a way that makes healthy change more sustainable — alongside the foundations of nutrition, movement, and your medical care.
What This Approach Actually Addresses
The stress–weight connection. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, which influences appetite, cravings (especially for sugar and refined carbs), and where the body stores fat. Nervous-system regulation is the center of my practice, and calming that stress response is often the most useful lever.
Sleep. Poor sleep is one of the most underrated drivers of weight struggle — it disrupts the hormones that govern hunger and fullness and makes cravings harder to manage. Acupuncture's well-known benefit for sleep does double duty here.
Cravings and emotional eating. Treatment aims to reduce the intensity of cravings and to support the calmer baseline from which it's easier to make choices that align with your goals, rather than eating to manage stress.
Hormonal and metabolic factors. Thyroid issues, perimenopause and menopause, PCOS, and insulin regulation all affect weight, and these are areas where acupuncture and classical herbal medicine offer supportive care alongside your physician's management.
Digestive function. Bloating, sluggish digestion, and gut health all factor in, and are areas acupuncture commonly addresses.
A Responsible, Sustainable Approach
I don't offer crash protocols, extreme plans, or numeric promises. Health is the goal, not a number on a scale. If your situation calls for medical evaluation — thyroid testing, metabolic workup, or care from a physician or registered dietitian — I'll point you there, and I work alongside those providers rather than around them. For anyone whose relationship with food or body has become a source of real distress, the right support is a qualified physician or counselor, and I'll always say so.
What Treatment Looks Like
Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes).
A wide-angle conversation: your health history, stress and sleep, energy, digestion, hormonal picture, medications, and your goals — followed by your first treatment. We focus on how you feel and function, not just weight.
A typical course. This is gradual, cumulative work. A common rhythm is weekly sessions for several weeks, with progress measured in sleep quality, energy, craving intensity, and overall wellbeing — the things that make sustainable change possible.
What Patients Say
"After just 8 sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement in my neuropathy symptoms. The care and expertise provided made a significant difference in my daily life. I couldn't believe how better I felt, and I'm truly grateful for the support and guidance throughout the process." — Watsonville patient
Frequently Asked Questions
Will acupuncture make me lose weight? Acupuncture isn't a weight-loss treatment, and I won't promise pounds. What it can do is support the stress, sleep, craving, and hormonal factors that often stand in the way of healthy change, making your other efforts more sustainable. It works best alongside good nutrition, movement, and medical care.
How does acupuncture help with cravings? By calming the stress response and supporting balanced sleep and digestion, treatment can reduce the intensity of cravings and emotional-eating urges, helping you operate from a steadier baseline.
Can it help with hormonal weight issues, like perimenopause or PCOS? These are areas where acupuncture and herbal medicine offer supportive care alongside your physician's management. Treatment supports the hormonal and metabolic picture; it doesn't replace medical evaluation and care.
Do you offer a quick program or guaranteed results? No — and I'd be wary of anyone who does. This is gradual, whole-body support focused on health and sustainability, not crash plans or numeric guarantees.
Will you work with my doctor or dietitian? Yes, gladly. This approach is designed to complement medical and nutritional care, and I'll refer you for evaluation when your situation calls for it.
