Acupuncture for Depression in Santa Cruz

Medically reviewed by Dr. Ava Zack, DAcHM, LAc - Doctor of Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

Depression & Acupuncture

Depression is heavy, common, and treatable — and for many people, the standard treatments alone don't get them all the way to feeling like themselves. If you're looking for a research-supported, drug-free way to support your recovery alongside the care you're already receiving, electroacupuncture is one of the better-evidenced complementary options for depression. I want to walk you through what the science genuinely shows, and how I'd work with you.

Please read this first. Depression is a serious medical condition, and electroacupuncture is a complement to mental health care — not a replacement for therapy, medication, or your doctor. Never stop or change an antidepressant except under your prescriber's direction. If you are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please reach out for help right now: call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. You deserve support, and there are people ready to help immediately.

What the Research Shows

This is one of the areas where the evidence for acupuncture is genuinely strong and consistent — multiple large analyses reaching the same conclusion:

Electroacupuncture boosts standard antidepressant treatment. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 66 randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture-assisted treatment, combined with antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs), produced stronger antidepressant effects and fewer side effects than antidepressants alone. Among the acupuncture approaches, electroacupuncture plus antidepressant tends to rank at or near the top for effectiveness.

It can work faster and with fewer side effects. Research indicates that adding acupuncture can accelerate how quickly antidepressants take effect and reduce their adverse effects — a meaningful benefit, since the first weeks on an antidepressant, before it fully works, are often the hardest. A 2024 multicenter randomized trial found that adding acupuncture to SSRIs produced a significantly greater improvement in depression scores than SSRIs alone, with fewer side effects like palpitations, fatigue, and nausea.

It helps the sleep that depression disrupts. Electroacupuncture has specific evidence for depression-related insomnia — a common, exhausting part of depression — which supports recovery on another front.

The honest framing. The strongest, most consistent evidence is for electroacupuncture as an addition to standard treatment, not as a standalone replacement for it. That's exactly how I use it — to strengthen and support the care you're already receiving from your doctor and therapist.

How I Work With Depression

Alongside your mental health care, always. Electroacupuncture complements therapy and medication; it doesn't replace them. With your permission, I'm glad to coordinate with your prescriber or therapist, and I'll always encourage you to stay connected to that care.

A nervous-system approach. Depression involves the whole nervous system, and nervous-system regulation is the center of my practice. Treatment supports the physical side of depression — the sleep disruption, the stress physiology, the low energy and heaviness — using points and an electroacupuncture approach consistent with the research (which commonly uses points like SP6, PC6, HT7, and LR3).

The whole person. Depression rarely travels alone — it comes with poor sleep, anxiety, pain, and fatigue. Treatment addresses the whole picture, which is part of why many patients find acupuncture a supportive space during a hard time.

Honest and safe. If your depression is severe, worsening, or accompanied by thoughts of self-harm, that needs urgent professional care, and I'll always guide you toward it. Acupuncture is a complement to that safety, never a substitute.

What Treatment Looks Like

Your first visit (about 75–90 minutes). A thoughtful, unhurried conversation about how depression is affecting you — mood, sleep, energy, stress, and the care you're receiving — followed by your first treatment. You set the pace.

A typical course. The research points to consistent treatment over several weeks — commonly 2–3 sessions per week early on, easing as you improve, over roughly 6+ weeks. We track how you're doing in the ways that matter to you, in coordination with your other providers.

What Patients Say

"After just 8 sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement in my neuropathy symptoms. The care and expertise provided made a significant difference in my daily life. I couldn't believe how better I felt, and I'm truly grateful for the support and guidance throughout the process." — Watsonville patient

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture really help depression? Yes — it's one of the better-evidenced uses of acupuncture. Large analyses of randomized trials show that electroacupuncture added to standard antidepressant treatment produces stronger improvement, often faster onset, and fewer side effects than medication alone. It works best as a complement to your mental health care, not a replacement.

Can it replace my antidepressant or therapy? No, and I won't suggest that. The strongest evidence is for acupuncture added to standard treatment. Never stop or change medication except under your prescriber's direction. Acupuncture strengthens your existing care; it doesn't replace it.

Can acupuncture help the side effects of my antidepressant, or help it work faster? Research suggests it can do both — reducing common antidepressant side effects and accelerating how quickly the medication takes effect. Those early weeks before an antidepressant fully works are often the hardest, and this is where the added support can matter.

Will it help my sleep? I'm exhausted but can't sleep. Very likely — electroacupuncture has specific evidence for depression-related insomnia, and improved sleep often supports recovery more broadly. Many patients feel this benefit early.

What if I'm in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm? Please reach out for immediate help — call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. Acupuncture is not crisis care. I care about your safety first, and I'll always guide you toward urgent professional support when it's needed.
